Zócalo'S STORY

The most exciting and colourful area of any Mexican city would be without doubt, the Zócalo. This ‘central open-air plaza’ comes alive with the wandering Mariachi & Marimba bands, poets selling their verse, peddlers offering all manner of wares, children selling ‘Chiclets’ (mini pellets of chewing gum) cheekily extending hands with a wink and a grin. Families from outlying communities camp on the sidewalk selling woven baskets, pottery or ‘albrijes’ (brightly painted carved wooden figures). Large colourful helium balloons fly high in bunches bordering the square. It is the place to dine alfresco watching the magical world around you as it transpires.

No matter how poor the people or how great their hardship, the generosity, friendliness and merriment of the Mexican is an inspiration and tonic.

The Zócalo is the place to meet friends, new and old, to fall in love, to meditate, to embrace happiness, to laugh or cry, but most of all ……

to celebrate life!

Alan and Davina opened their first Mexican Restaurant in Alice Springs which they successfully ran from 1988 to 1999. With 4 children gradually approaching adolescence they decided to move to Perth via Mexico. With this trip they discovered a renewed desire to reproduce more authentic dishes in their restaurant.

In July 2000 Zócalo was born.

In 2004 Zócalo moved to its current position in Safety Bay.

Alan and Davina are dedicated to bring all the flavours, diversity and colourful feel of Mexico to Safety Bay. In 2013 Alan and Davina travelled from Mexico City down the south of Mexico to the Yucatan peninsula gathering more recipes and ideas to augment in the restaurant. Their passion is rewarded by a dedicated following and those who genuinely enjoy the traditional Mexican food

Fully Licenced

Zócalo has an extensive drink menu featuring beers - including a number of Mexican imports, terrific Australian wines, house made sangria (choose from red or white) and a fantastic selection of cocktails and R-rated milkshakes. Our margaritas are well sought after.

Non-alcoholic drinks include the usual suspects such as soft drinks and juices. However we do include Agua Frescas- fresh fruit juices or milk based; as well as the traditional Agua de Jamaica (hibiscus water)
